Oh yeah, its fun turning the 3D view. I use the following process
1) right click the 3d window and select zoom to fit
2) click and hold on the very bottom point of the model
3) move mouse vertically up until the horizontal bricks are almost
horizontal (a bit of left/right movement can help as well)
4) release mouse
5) click and hold half way up the far right (or left) of the 3d window
and move mouse horizontally (if you got step 3 just about correct you
are now rotating around the Y axis)
6) release when the model is orientated how you wish
7) now drag the model over to an angle so you can see into the nook or
cranny you wish to peer into
And don't forget, if it all goes horribly wrong, just right click on the
3d window and select 3d view angle to put it back to normal (despite
what it says in the LDraw books, this works even if 3d view is already
selected, so no need to change to front view (say) and then back to 3d
view)

| (...) This takes a lot of getting used to. The problem is that when you rotate the plate 90 degrees, the arrow keys continue to work as though it was stud up - left moves it 1/2 stud left, up moves 1/2 stud back etc, instead of 1 plate or whatever (...) (20 years ago, 11-Oct-04, to lugnet.cad)
