The cube does offer a possibility that a single plate doesnt. You could remove
the top three panels and view the lower three panels from both sides. With a
sufficiently stable base, you could even use it as a candy dish.

Of course, maybe someone else can come up with a smoother design for the cube
edges using some piece or technique I havent thought of...

Try putting 1x1 plates on the headlight studs, and use those as mount points
for a series of long 1x plates on both surfaces of the joints.
