I still think it looks like the islamic tiling from The Alhambra in Granada

Hi, Steve. I take that as a great compliment that these patterns remind you of
those in the Alhambra. Ive never been there, but the tiling examples Ive seen
in photos are stunning. Does the Koran have a section on intructions for
Islamic tiling? If so, Ill have to pick one up. @8^)

Isnt a
square tile repeating pattern mathematically restricted to only 7 (types).
Have you completed an example of each? Maybe this could be a (more
mathematical) motivation?

I had never heard of this rule. Its very interesting, although Im not sure I
totally grasp what it means. I found
this website which explains
it, although not really in beginners terms, and provides examples of each.
Apparently its not that there are 17 types of repeating square patterns, but
rather that there are 17 types of plane symmerty groups, of which 3 fall under
the sub-catagory of square lattice.
It would be my guess that all of my headlight brick mosaic patterns represent
only 1 of these 17 types. Being that LEGO bricks are almost all rectanglular,
it would probably be difficult to come up with a repeating pattern that was an
example of one of the other 16 types. Maybe its possible using wing-shapes or
slopes, but I dont think it would be possible using just headlight bricks. But
the again, my understanding of these 17 types is pretty limited.
Nonetheless, Im still quite motivated to further explore this 1 out of 17 types
of plane symmerty, and I keep uploading new patterns to my
Brickshelf page.
Cheers,
