  My First Mosaic

Hello everyone in mosaic land, I've been lurking on these forums for many years and this is my first post! I have been a Lego fanatic for 30-odd years and as a very busy adult, the time I have been able to devote to Lego has declined quite a bit (...) (21 years ago, 28-Mar-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic)

  Re: Mosaic programs

(...) I'd say it looks like the image on the right was contrast enhanced before the dithering was applied. Stand back and squint at the images to see the change in contrast. The light colors are all clearly whiter. You can also see some color (...) (21 years ago, 15-Feb-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic, FTX)

  Mosaic programs

Now we have something to compare: (URL) On the left the original image. In the middle my result with black, white, yellow, red and blue. On the right Corey's result with the same colours. I don't make artistic mosaics, they're purely mathematical. I (...) (21 years ago, 15-Feb-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic, FTX)

Re: Comparing techniques (Error Diffusion Dithering)

(...) i will take all the sugestions i can get! and i think all of us working together would be a good thing. it seems that you two know way more about dithering then i do. Cory, i wish i understood how you were doing your dithering cause your (...) (21 years ago, 14-Feb-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic, FTX)

Re: Comparing techniques (Error Diffusion Dithering)

(...) As I said before, that was 90% of the work... creating a palette of LEGO colors that were exact. A lot of trial-and-error was involved. Since my color mosaic of my girl looks exactly like the computer-generated image, I feel I was successful (...) (21 years ago, 12-Feb-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic, FTX)

Re: Comparing techniques (Error Diffusion Dithering)

(...) Even if every website had the same value for 'blue', it seems obvious that even TLC is sending out 'blue' parts that vary from a single color... (URL) (21 years ago, 12-Feb-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic)

Re: Comparing techniques (Error Diffusion Dithering)

(...) Every website uses different RGB-values (I did too). So which one is EXACT? (Have you read the post on the HP night bus? Many shades of the same colour...) Example: Red (196,40,27) on (URL) (196,40,27) on (URL) (223,0,50) on (URL) (189,56,38) (...) (21 years ago, 12-Feb-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic, FTX)

Re: Comparing techniques (Error Diffusion Dithering)

(...) LOL, this is available at a dozen well-known LEGO websites including Peeron. Now you can add those RGBs to your 'program'. It seems silly to me to create a LEGO mosaic... using colors that are far from the colors of the corresponding LEGO (...) (21 years ago, 12-Feb-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic, FTX)

Re: Is it efficient to replace plates w/bricks in a plates studs up mosaic?

(...) Thanks for this suggestion. that way i wont get colums of bricks all the same size and the layers will be more interlocked. great idea! bob (21 years ago, 10-Feb-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic)

Re: Is it efficient to replace plates w/bricks in a plates studs up mosaic?

(...) hi Maarten, you bring up a good point. it never occurred to me that weight would also be an issue. this now becomes a weight vs. part count efficiency problem. i'm going to have to go find the weight of the parts i'm using and do some (...) (21 years ago, 10-Feb-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic)

Re: Comparing techniques (Error Diffusion Dithering)

(...) Oooh! Now that's a sentence with wonderfully ominous potential. Bulwer-Lytton awards, anyone? Dave! (21 years ago, 10-Feb-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic, FTX)

Re: Comparing techniques (Error Diffusion Dithering)

(...) Because nothing is truly without color; there are things darker than lego black. Also, using a slightly-less-than-t...ally-black shade allows outlines to be drawn with RGB(0,0,0) and still show up (at least, somewhat). And with shading (...)   Comparing techniques (Error Diffusion Dithering)

(...) Indeed, the more colours you use, the smoother the image will be. But not everybody has that many colours at his disposal. (...) Isn't that inside information of TLG? Where did you find this information? I contacted TLG about it, but never got (...) (21 years ago, 10-Feb-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic, FTX)

Re: Is it efficient to replace plates w/bricks in a plates studs up mosaic?

Bob, One more suggestion: Because there is no "brickwall"-structure in your MLCad results, it might not be such a bad idea to alternately read lines from left to right and from right to left. In my program I also have something like this: For I = 0 (...) (21 years ago, 8-Feb-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic)

Lifting a corner of the veil

Tips & tricks: 1) If you decide to convert an image without dithering (e.g. a cartoon character), you may have noticed that a significant part of the image turns (dark) grey (in case this colour is in your list of colours to be used), even if you (...)   Re: Is it efficient to replace plates w/bricks in a plates studs up mosaic?

(...) Yes it is ! If you build larger mosaics, you'll see that it gets much heavier if you only use plates. The more bricks you use, the lighter your finished mosaic will be. The best method?? In my mosaic I searched for large areas to use bricks (...) (21 years ago, 5-Feb-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic)
