I just checked out the following site:
http://www.brickbay.com/store.asp?p=legomill.  Someone is selling some
really cool custom mini-figs.  I am not here to advertise, but there are
some excellent examples of Star Wars custom mini-figs, including Admiral
Thrawn and Mara Jade.  Plus, the G.I. Joe, Star Trek, DC, and Marvel Comics
lines are excellent.

I believe I may know who's responsible for them--unless there
are more than one or two people doing it.  If it's who I think
it is, I'm tickled to see his work going in this direction.  I
had been thinking about creating a small army of Crimson Guards
  just last summer...

The idea of GI Joe from LEGO has been floating around in my head since I was
a kid and actually did make various 'Joe vehicles. Of course the figs were
just standard torso's that worked as well as they could (not well <G>).

Wow. I'm just blown away. I'd get all the Cobra ones if I had the cash!
(Custom tiles... hmm... can anyone who's bought from this person vouch for
the durability of the custom decals? Presumably the same quality as the
decals on the minifigs).

I assumed it was enamel paint, but perhaps an investment in decals
has been made ... ?  Can one get those sorts of transfer decals
  commercially?

Well - they COULD also be clear labels. I've experimented with white labels
and my inkjet with mediocre results, but a color laser printer would do
wonders on white or transparent(clear) labels. Kevin Hall over in .castle
has done some awesome custom torso labels for his castle web page using this
method.

Of course what I'd really like to know is how the faces were done.. Labels,
or repainted..  some of the detail, I'd think, would require either an
airbrush and a very good template or a far steadier hand with a small brush
than I possess... or a very creative way of applying a very small decal/label.

Those Cobra's would go well with one of my recent MOCs (soon to be posted -
hopefully tomorrow).
