Gunports should be okay using the standard LEGO 2x2 flag as gunport lids,
mounted to 2x1 plates with handle (2540).

It's not so much the covering of the port that I'm worried about as the
actually fitting of 15 into either side. It'll take some very crafty work to
get a deck to match ports built into a SNOTed hull to the cannon on the deck
within, not to mention to keep stability with a number of ports.

So far my SNOT outer hulls have literally been built out at the appropriate
curve from a structure of internal boxes (pretty much LFB's method, with a
bit of tweaking to suit my parts situation). To get the right curve and
merge in a non-SNOT deck while building in SNOT ports that can't be to deep
through a sculpting hull...

The Snottler II used the SNOT hull sides to support a box framework inside
which in turn supported the superstructure - ie the only thing which touched
the ground/sea was SNOT walls. It was a surprisingly strong arrangement.

(I changed techniques for the Snottler III because I needed the
modularisation the cladded box style allowed.)

It would be possible to build your gun deck as a box suspended between SNOT
hull walls.... that way you don't need to to the complicated maths to make
sure your snot dimensions much your studs up dimensions at three joins
(waterline, gun deck spar deck).

Alternatively you could suspend your gun deck within the hull box... it need
not interlock with the hull walls, butting against them might be good enough.

Fifteen gun ports a side wouldn't be difficult if you go for two stud
spacing between ports (though finding 30 matching gun port lids might). It's
very cramped for the gunners, though.

I'm going to be sitting with a pad of paper and a bucket of LEGO for a while!

Oh, and I'd have to get a significant number of cannon somewhere! Bricklink
I suppose...

Keep the gunports closed!

"Captain, French Frigate to larboard!"
"Beat to quarters! Run out the gu..."
"Sir?"
"On second thought, *run away*!"

Maybe a single broadside, LEGO style, as a compromise?

As for running from the French at sea.... is there a precedent for that? ;-)

The grey or black modern hulls give that rivetted industrial look, which -
while not accurate - gives the right impression. If a SNOT 'wooden hull will
work is definitely worth finding out though...

I've come to see past all the little bumps in the SNOT system, so I'd never
actually thought about rivets. The sculpting of the wooden hull is what
really gets me though -- if a system could be developed to get it right, we
could end up with Victorys and Constitutions and Agamemnons floating about
-- to scale!

Also, the bigger the model, the less noticable the studs ;-)

Cheers

Richie Dulin
