Hi again,

Might as well post another chopper while I'm on a roll:)

The Skystalker Stealth Gunship is the first aircraft I've built in a few years.
It looks a lot like the classic Cobra gunship, but was mainly inspired by the
stealthier Commanche. It is operated by a standard crew of two, carries a
machine cannon in the nose and a single air-to-air missile for self defense, and
has space for various missiles or alternative cargo in the rear cabin.

The Skystalker doesn't carry quite as many weapons as a heavier gunship might;
but sacrifices armor and firepower for speed, agility, and a very low radar
profile. Its missions include antiarmor, recon, covert insertion and extraction,
and even medevac.

Deeplinks and comments:

I'm a sucker for light camo on the undersides of aircraft, but in retrospect
wonder if I should have done this one in all gray. I've used all four grays, and
am still figuring out which of them look good together. Some of the pieces only
exist in certain colors of course.

I'm quite pleased with the detail I fit into the tail.

In true stealth style, the landing gear fold up neatly and the missile bays open
up.

The five pack missile pods (lifted from Dan Rubin's design) can be replaced with
less cool looking, but infinitely more playable flick-fire missile pods.
Alternatively the missiles can be removed completely leaving space in the back
for a few soldiers or even a stretcher, giving the gunship excellent
versatility.

The Skystalker went into action against hordes of mecha at BrickWorld 07:

but had quite the inauspicious baptism of fire when it was shot down over the
AMCP urban battlefield. Happily for future Skystalker pilots, specialized
anti-mecha weaponry is being devised for future engagements with mechanized
legged enemies:)

PLMKWYT!

Magnus

Hi Magnus.
Indeed, It does look like a cross between a Comanche and a Cobra. The
retractable landing skids are a nifty touch. I doubt that's ever been done on a
real helicopter, but it looks good. The overall model is nicely proportioned and
I really like the fenestron-type tail rotor Quite a few people build futuristic
looking helicopter gunships, but seem to forget adding something to counter the
torque. I also like the nose-mounted canon. Using a ball-joint for that is a
clever idea. It's a very nice model.

The camouflage is a bit tricky. I've tried camouflage on a few of my models and
it's hard to make it look right. IMHO, on your gunship it looks just a bit too
stripy, if you know what I mean. It try to build camouflage in big splotches of
one colour, with relatively smooth edges (as far as that is possible with
rectangular bricks).
One example that I am particularly happy with is my Flanker:

It isn't too uncommon for the undersides of helicopters to be lighter than the
top, even if the US military doesn't seem to do it very often anymore, so that's
just fine.

Cheers,
Ralph

Ralph, (...) Thanks for your kind words! You do camo very nicely. I think the problem with this chopper is that there are too many colors being used and there isn't as much space to spread them out over, as there is on say the top of a fighter (...)
