Don,
The wheels or tracks effectively add 2 to 6 studs of width, so starting anything
more than 8 wide is going to make for a unrealistically big tank. I'd start with
6 o 8 in width, and maybe two and a half times that in length.
I like to make sure there is space inside for figs, but this does make things
all the more challenging/interesting. If you want to build a replica in true
minfig scale, you should probably concentrate on the exterior and not worry
about fitting in the figs. If you're willing to sacrifice a bit of scale for
funcationality and playability, see if you can fit the figs inside.
Compare my vehicles to Bryce Rollins' - he tends to focus on getting the scale
just right, but as a result he doesn't really have space for the figs inside.
There isn't a right way or a wrong way, just different building styles, and we
all end up having to choose between scale and functionality.

Start building and see what works for you, I've built almost 20 tanks and AFVs
over the past 2 years and am still learning new tricks.
cheers
Magnus

| Thanks to all who replied to my questions. I have ordered lots of LEGO to build with. It will probably be next week before these come in and I can build. In the meantime, I will study the info presented. I do have a couple of questions. As almost (...) (17 years ago, 22-Jul-07, to lugnet.build.military)
