Yeah, one time in a post I figured out exactly how many tread links I used (it
may even be in this thread somewhere, if not it was a resulting one) - I recall
that the person asking the question was aghast at the notion that they'd be
spending $30-40 just for treads to make a tank. Ah well, so it goes ;)
Carl Greatrix also counted the links he used in one of his models. A quick
search on Lugnet for "treads" or "links" will probably turn up the appropriate
articles. Ahhh, never mind, here they are:

I used 59 per side on the PzIII, Carl's Tiger used 64 per side, and his
chieftain used 74 per side. 36 links cost $6.50 + S&H, or about that ...

I guess I'd have to say "yes". Actually, it looks slightly too high for some
versions of the PzIII, but about right for other versions. It's about right,
and certainly accurate within the error of minifig proportions. The driver and
Machinegunner/Radioman can sit in the front (just barely), and the main gun
loader can stand to retrieve shells from the storage down below.

Thanks ... I spent a long time trying to figure out how to allow the turret to
rotate, while still maintaining the open space for gun breech, crew, seats,
etc. Finally I was struck with the inspiration to consider how it was
accomplished in real life ... lo and behold, that worked pretty well ;)

| (...) In the past I had made a few tracked tanks and APCs. I didn't have enough of the track pieces so I had to fill in a few gaps with the really thin chain type. It didn't look good at all, but it was all I could do. Too bad I never took any pics (...) (23 years ago, 16-Oct-01, to lugnet.build.military)
