USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Daniel Siskind
Partially inspired by Mattias Mårtensson's USS Fletcher, and partly out of my own curiosity to attempt a new ship-building technique, I threw together a 1/4 size version of the minifig scale Cleveland Class curiser I've been dreaming about building (...) (22 years ago, 7-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military) !!

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Shaun Sullivan
(...) This looks beautiful! I can't get over how smoothly and effectively the flexing works! What sort of structure is on the inside of the ship to hold the hull in position? How long is the overall model? Any chance we can get a top-down view? (...) (22 years ago, 7-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Daniel Siskind
(...) It's just over 48 inches (with the flag). I added a top down photo, but it's a fuzzy since I had to take it standing on a chair! Dan (22 years ago, 7-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Ted Welsh
Dan, this is a *quantum* leap forward in hull design. I, too, am curious as to how you did it. Construction details would be great! I tremble at the thought of a minifig-scale rendition. -Teddy (22 years ago, 7-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Daniel Siskind
(...) OK, I've posted pictures "under the hood." The design is so simple that you'll probably kick yourself for not thinking of it. I have been all week! It will be really easy to render construction plans in L-draw, because the two sides could be (...) (22 years ago, 7-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Bruce Hietbrink
Dan, This is beautiful! If the resolution on the photos was a little bit worse I wouldn't believe that was made with Lego bricks. Is the hull all 1x2's? I wonder what the inclusion of 1x3's or 1x4's would do to the shape of the curve. I've seen a (...) (22 years ago, 7-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Daniel Siskind
(...) The hull is only 1x2s at the very ends. At the aft there is a really steep curve and at the bow there is actually a flare, although it's really subtle. The rest of the ship is made up mainly of 1 x 12's and 2 x 10's. You actually get a nicer (...) (22 years ago, 8-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Gil Shaw
Wow. That is beautiful. Aside from the gorgeous line of the hull...just can't stop looking at it...the choice of tan for the deck plating really highlights the topside shape of it. The colour contrast it creates with the AA guns and spar towers (...) (22 years ago, 7-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Gregory Muri
WOW!! Dan this is incredible. You have really captured the curve of the ships hull in an excellent way. Something like this would make a truly innovative kit release. Not to mention a wonderful direction for your WW2 kit line. I can't wait to see (...) (22 years ago, 7-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Adrian Drake
(...) but I never would've thought to use this on a ship hull. It looks marvelous, although I sort of miss the "legoness" of the pixellated look you'd normally get from a ship's hull. You'd better hurry up and build your minifig scale version before (...) (22 years ago, 7-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Tim Courtney
(...) While I do agree to an extent, I also think there's a LOT to be said for people who take bricks and build with them in such a way you can't tell it's LEGO. Those techniques are a real artform in my mind. Great work, Dan!! (...) Got that right! (...) (22 years ago, 7-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Rick Kujawa
(...) Thats a nice looking ship. Perhaps some recall my First National Bank from almost 4 yrs ago: (URL) used a similar curve technique. There is an 18" ruler and 7" brass bank that was the reference in the first picture. Maybe you also remember my (...) (22 years ago, 8-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Mattias Martensson
Great work Dan! Is good to know that the USS Fletcher is not sailing alone any longer on the allied side. The Missouri would of course be a even more welcome reinforcement to the fleet. Please feel free to use armament from the Fletcher if suitable (...) (22 years ago, 7-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —John Spencer Rezkalla
(...) Consider me big time impressed. Great job of advancing "realism" in Lego design. (22 years ago, 8-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Larry Pieniazek
(...) WOW! That is cool! I am suspecting that this technique won't work well for cargo ships, or other hulls that have a lot of bow curvature but for cruisers and destroyers which knife through the water it works really well. Bravo for discovering (...) (22 years ago, 8-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Richie Dulin
(...) I think it would tend to work better than SNOT for wider, more rounded hulls; SNOT works well for narrow and pointy designs with a flattening curve, but gets very 'stepped' if you try to widen the hull too much without adding a *lot* of (...) (22 years ago, 9-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Ross Crawford
(...) You'd probably have to use hinges along the hull to get the more rounded hulls, which would make the construction somewhat more complex. You can only bend LEGO so far.... I'd be interested to see Dan's ideas for big flared hulls though... (...) (22 years ago, 10-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Richie Dulin
(...) True. I've experimented with very wide (32 stud) SNOT hulls (both for a modern tanker and a 19th century ship), but traditional SNOT just can't do it well. I then tried building the bow studs forward (curving back), and the sides studs outward (...) (22 years ago, 10-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Larry Pieniazek
(...) Many container ships and tankers and suchlike are completely vertical, in fact when one looks down they look like rectangles with bows and sterns tacked on, it's not till well under the water line that you get curving inward to the keel. But (...) (22 years ago, 10-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Daniel Siskind

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Lindsay Frederick Braun
(...) Oh, that we could all count on cargo that can just be "flown off". I just looked and couldn't find any good pictures of that. But I know they must be out there. ...and Larry, I've been thinking about your RO-RO for some time now. Maybe getting (...) (22 years ago, 10-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Richie Dulin

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Larry Pieniazek
(...) Nothing. I just happen to work at minifig scale (and a 20K TEU ship at that scale would truly be "really large") (22 years ago, 10-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Stefan Garcia
COOL!!! That is beautiful! Can't wait to see the big version. That is gonna rock! -Stefan- (...) (22 years ago, 9-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Lindsay Frederick Braun
(...) That really looks excellent, and the technique lends itself especially well for the "regular" curves on US non-capital warships. Can you achieve a limited outward flare as well, perhaps with a second level of shim-bricks as you use to hold the (...) (22 years ago, 9-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Daniel Siskind
(...) There is a limited amount of flare in the very bow and aft section, but the pictures don't do justice. The "ribs" are staggered one brick forward for each two bricks in height, giving a slight flare near the bow. The bow of the Missouri is (...) (22 years ago, 10-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

I don't think any of my desighns are true "innovations," but more of a (...) (22 years ago, 10-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Richie Dulin
(...) So smooth! The subtle curves are great. (I love the anchors too.) How strong is the final hull? (I note there's a pic of the hull on its side) Can it be picked up and carried intact? Cheers Richie Dulin (22 years ago, 9-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —Daniel Siskind
(...) I can carry the ship with one hand (in the middle). It has a lot of flex, but it's remarkably strong. Dan (22 years ago, 10-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —David Rabadan

Re: USS Duluth - Hull design innovation! —George Haberberger
(...) Good golly Dan, I can only echo the superlatives already written. This is a landmark step in thin beamed naval vessels! Thanks, George (22 years ago, 10-Mar-03, to lugnet.build.military)
