Yes! This is exactly the point I touched upon in my WTC design paper(1). I've
dubbed this type of technique as "mind's eye modeling", which I describe as
"creating a model that visually matches or exceeds what a typical person expects
to see. In other words, a model that appears to closely match their own mental
image of that object." This is very different from building a model to match a
photograph, and it's somewhat different than "selective compression" where the
compressed portions are immediately obvious to an observer.

However I would disagree that counting studs isn't important for this process.
The real challenge is identifying the "critical dimensions" that need to have
their studs counted. Some dimensions need to be counted and some don't! When I
built my first space shuttle model, a counting error in studs resulted in the
wing span being oversized by a mere 10% - and as a result the model didn't look
right. I had to completely rebuild the wings. Other areas of the model were
over-scaled by 10% or more - but those didn't matter!

Also "mind's eye modeling" isn't limited to certain micro scales. My stealth
fighter (3) is a larger model that I would consider to successfully exploit this
technique. There have been quite a few remarks of how much it looks like the
real thing, but I think it's simply because my model captures the features that
most people remember of the plane within their own imperfect memory. Most people
don't have a photographic memory. If you compare my model to a picture of the
real aircraft, then MANY discrepancies are immediately apparent.

(...) I am a micro newbie. I followed the general "a micro fig is a 1x1 round" guideline for BrickFest and built a building. It was a total blast to do although in my opinion actually quite difficult to get the desired look. A very intriguing (...) (20 years ago, 25-Aug-04, to lugnet.build.microscale, FTX)
