I told her this idea was silly. What I like most about micro-scale is how
free-form it is. To set measurements and scales and metric-system prefixes
to it would lessen the fun for me.

I agree. Down with compartmentalized dorkism! There was similar sillines
(IMO) in .space when people wanted to come up with standard rules for
defining different types of spaceships, ignoring the fact that these MOCs by
different builders were coming from completely different sci-fi universes
(some based on official sets, others on TV or movie inspirations, others
compltely from the builders heads).
IMO the only time to worry about agreed-upon scale is when people plan on
combining MOCs into some group display, like a moonbase, the ccc standard, or
some LTCs train layout.

Hello all,
IMO, Microscale is really in a development stage, and although there are some
key players that have done some outstanding work and have for years, most AFOL
have yet to dabble in this scale. Micro is a delight because with in a small
space, and a limited amount of bricks, and time (although not always as little
time as one would expect) we can achieve amazing impact and some outstanding
detail.
Having said that, I want to cover on a few things..... Im just a player/builder
here, I have no answers, I profess no proficiency and I only know my own
reality. (Especially based on what I learned from the Micro Display at BrickFest
where I received a lot of email prior to the event requesting information on the
boundaries of Micro building.)
I love the excitement that is being built for this theme. I can not express how
cool it was to have other fans come up to me and say, You know, I thought the
whole micro thing was lame, until I saw the MOCs, and now Im inspired.
I have talked about a standard, a few times now, but please hear me out. Anyone
that knows me, knows Im totally against any compartmentalizing. I hate
standardization with a passion, and I certainly dont want to see Micro
standards lock anyone into a certain scale or design mode.
Having said that, I must say, I was surprised by the feedback I received from
ppl being so confused about scale for the layout at BrickFest. What I would
like to suggest, and I would love to hear feedback on is some guidelines for ppl
that are not so adventurous as others when it comes to building in a scale that
they are not familiar with.
We all know that for some, building MOCs is a simple step, they jump in and
never look back.
BUT..... for others is a tiny step from first Lego instructions, then some
modifications of already established designs, borrowing and pinching others
ideas and techniques until one creates something uniquely their own. This
second group, that is a bit shy or intimidated by taking a leap into Micro, will
benefit from some guidelines on scale (notice how Im not using the words
standard).
This by no means, should be considered guidelines anyone MUST follow, but just a
way of introducing others into the joy of building small.
Another place, and probably most important, that these guidelines will come in
play is any future display that incorporates many ppls Micro MOCs into an
overall layout, similar to CC, moonbase, or train/town standards.
I personally know many that did not participate or were hesitant to take part in
the display for fear that their own MOC would be out of scale. That fact
saddens me, because Micro is a great place for lots of the community to play,
especially when we incorporate all themes in a Micro World.
I hope to see MORE castle, pirates and space Micro layouts to expand along with
the town. I see the Micro displays as a great place for a lot of the themes to
co-exist. (Yeah okay, that may be a bit too John Lennon for most. You can take
the girl to DC, you just cant rip the hippy dippy idealism from her.)
This post is in hopes of fostering a good discussion about where Micro can or
should go.
What do others think?

| (...) I am a micro newbie. I followed the general "a micro fig is a 1x1 round" guideline for BrickFest and built a building. It was a total blast to do although in my opinion actually quite difficult to get the desired look. A very intriguing (...) (20 years ago, 25-Aug-04, to lugnet.build.microscale, FTX)
