Oh, it works with TLC’s technic stuff -- but yes, it does have the lump in the middle. But it wouldn’t work in this case though because the 4x4 round brick attaches via an axle hole (crossed). So it must be a TLC half axle, half pin variant.

Speaking of chunky mechas...

I think what I like about it is the fact that it does kinda look like the many MB mechas that are out there. These bipedal Mechas are exactly what MB is all about. It’s the whole Robocop Ed-209 thing for me, since I have no other real references. Well, maybe Zoids. I don’t really know anything about Mechas in terms of Anime.

I’ll probably keep messing with this design and come up with an actual variant that is more than just color changes -- well, maybe. Mainly I want to mess with the upper leg section. And only someone that has built this thing would know how cramped the interior actually is -- barely enough room for my mini with his helmet on -- and I think I already made the cockpit one plate lower than specified in the online instructions. I’ve already had to change the feet for greater stability too.

It’s a fairly simple design actually. And I think it’s the kind of thing that makes everyone crazy in terms of those horrible TLC mecha designs, like the ones in LOM. It’s obviously no big deal to actually make something fairly small and quite functional without using lots and lots of parts or even anything terribly unusual in the configuration. This black variant and even Gil’s original uses those somewhat rare black barrels, but dark or light grey would be fine too. MLCad informs me that the set is something like 155-160 elements. And this would not be hard to put together either. I guess it could sell for $15-20 USD. TLC is making the hugest mistake not supporting the old space themes and for which it could create new product lines.

Right now, I sort of want to go all BT1 with this thing, but that windscreen only comes in trans-black so far. This canopy design is pretty sweet too, I liked it right off. It’d be nice to see in several trans-colors but especially trans-yellow, trans-red, trans-antifreeze, and trans-dark blue.

sigh
