My “cheat” for the legs is to use a “Technic Axle 3” and a “Technic Brick 1 x 2 with Axlehole” in place of the specified “Technic Axle Pin” and “Technic Brick 1 x 2 with Hole” combination. Otherwise the legs sort of spin more or less freely and the head droops when the Mech stands.

I figure there are other solutions to the problem:
* There is away to reinforce the pin side of the axle pin

It’s hardly canonical, but here’s a very effective method if you’re willing to add infidel materials to your ABS.

  • That someday TLC will make a “Technic Axle Pin with friction”

Did you, by the way, happen to try the MB near-equivalent of the Technic pin? I know that there’s a big round lump in the middle of the MB part, but I’ve never thought to test the pin’s diameter relative to LEGO Technic holes.

For those with keen eyes, there are three differences in my variant than are present in Gil’s original -- I have pushed out the legs a little farther apart by adding a single 2x2 round plate between the main body of the mech and the trunk of the legs on each side, I don’t yet have the 2x4 wedge for the feet in the right color so I have used a common black 1x3 slope instead, and yes -- that’s an MB whip antenna. None of these changes effects the problem I have noted.

You’re using clones? Blasphemy!

Big thank yous to Gil and Allister for having all of this stuff up online. Occasionally, I very much enjoy building someone else’s design. It makes for a nice change of pace from doing one’s own thing all the time.

Also, is this the first Mech with genitalia? :)

Alas, the Brickshelf folder is no longer active, but I recall that this well-endowed Mech caused a bit of a stir a few years back.

This black variant (like the original) is a very cool design. You definitely like your mecha clunky! I haven’t tried much in small-scale mech design; maybe that’s something I should play around with...

Dave!

(...) Oh, it works with TLC's technic stuff -- but yes, it does have the lump in the middle. But it wouldn't work in this case though because the 4x4 round brick attaches via an axle hole (crossed). So it must be a TLC half axle, half pin variant. (...) (21 years ago, 3-Oct-03, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

Hey Y'all: I was building an all black variant... (URL) ...of Gil's Sprite Mech (see: (URL)) when I realized that he must have somehow cheated on the legs somehow. In building my variant I used Allister McLaren's building instructions from Ozbricks (...) (21 years ago, 3-Oct-03, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)
