Hey Yall:
I was building an all black variant...
...of Gils Sprite Mech (see:
http://home.cogeco.ca/~gtoradoch/Acer/Platfrm_spriteacc.htm) when I realized
that he must have somehow cheated on the legs somehow. In building my variant I
used Allister McLarens building instructions from Ozbricks (see:
http://www.ozbricks.net/brickpile/acer1.htm). Now maybe I havent understood
something, but I think that this mech does not actually hold the desired
position without some kind of cheat. Which is too bad because I really like
the ED-209 quality of this teeny mech.
My cheat for the legs is to use a Technic Axle 3 and a Technic Brick 1 x
2 with Axlehole in place of the specified Technic Axle Pin and Technic Brick
1 x 2 with Hole combination. Otherwise the legs sort of spin more or less
freely and the head droops when the Mech stands.
I figure there are other solutions to the problem:
* There is away to reinforce the pin side of the axle pin
* That someday TLC will make a Technic Axle Pin with friction
* One should carefully balance the Mech by placing lots of stuff on the
backside * Something else of which I remain unaware
For those with keen eyes, there are three differences in my variant than are
present in Gils original -- I have pushed out the legs a little farther apart
by adding a single 2x2 round plate between the main body of the mech and the
trunk of the legs on each side, I dont yet have the 2x4 wedge for the feet in
the right color so I have used a common black 1x3 slope instead, and yes --
thats an MB whip antenna. None of these changes effects the problem I have
noted.
Big thank yous to Gil and Allister for having all of this stuff up online.
Occasionally, I very much enjoy building someone elses design. It makes for a
nice change of pace from doing ones own thing all the time.
Also, is this the first Mech with genitalia? :)

Did you, by the way, happen to try the MB near-equivalent of the Technic pin? I know that there's a big round lump (...) (21 years ago, 3-Oct-03, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)
