What are good sets to get the appropriate bits for mid - small sized mecha?
I am interested in building one or two but only have blocks, technic and a
couple of (imho) bionicles that got given to me.

Those are good they give you some raw materials to work with.....
|
What are good sets to look out for? Do you guys buy stuff off brick link and
the like?

The entire Make and Create Line, Designer sets of the same creed, any Technic
sets you can get your hands on. Sets with parts that utilize the clip system,
(the size bar that a mini-figs hand can hold onto), sets that have stuff that
bends or spins, Every singled blessed Star Wars set by the umpteen pound full,
Technic Beams/Lift Arms and Gear Service packs either as accessories from Shop
at Home and Lego.com to Pitsco-Dacta bulk packs, buy sets in twos, Creator Tubs
if you can get your hands on them, Club Meetings where you can swap, Fests and
Cons where you can talk to experts.....
Check out the Mecha Part of the Week then cross index that through Peeron to see
what sets to buy......
Go to your Local Lego Road Show and build with the Create and Play back to
building basics part assortments.
Go to the Lego Mecha Hall of Fame, look at the parts that are used.
Buy sets with slopes and angles.
Get the Star Wars Technic Super Battle Driod, build stuff with Click hinges.
Exo-Toa!!!
Remember the general sizes commonly seen in Mecha building:
Small: Clips and Pins
Medium: Pins and click hindges
Large: Click hindges and gears
Super Large: Gears and goodness help you.
Buy bionicle and use the ball joints and other cool parts and learn the limits
of each type of Joint Technology.
Part of the trick in building Mecha is much the same with other styles in that
you really need good counts of parts, Like 2, 4, 6, 8 and even numbers of parts,
beacuse with Mech (humanoid form for example) you have:
Inside left, outside left
Inside right, outside right
x2 for the arms EACH, and x2 for the legs EACH.
So more often than not, the experienced Mech builder needs proper quanties of
pieces in pairs to complete the geometry of the arms and legs.
Stuff we have one or three or five of goes into the head, chest or torso.
Im always trying to use the goofy pieces I have one of, in the head or other
central body area.
When I buy a set it comes down to to basic principles, sets for parts, and sets
for elements.
Sets for parts help me build structure. Sets with elements are sets that have
that one cool or unique set of peices that brings specialness or charater to my
creations.
Hope that helps.
NO LIMIT - PLAY ON.
