The original VF-1 Valkyrie toys were made by Takatoku toys back in the
early 80's. Eventually, Bandai bought the rights from Takatoku and
produced some of the later Valkyrie models (like stuff seen in Macross:
Do You Remember Love?).
After Transformers and Gobots started being produced in the US, they
used robots from various unrelated Japanese toy lines. Megatron and
Soundwave (and the tape-bots) were from a line called New Microman.
Gobots were from a line called Machine Robo. Most of the Autobot cars
and the Dicepticon jets were from a line called Diaclone, and there were
actually small metal figures that could "ride" in the vehicles (that's why
some of the 1st Gen 'bots have openable cockpits). Hasbro wasn't too
picky about which 'bots they used, they just wanted to make money off
them. So they got the rights for whatever they could... some Transformers
came from Takara molds, some from Bandai. One of the reasons you
didn't ever see Jetfire on the cartoon is because they didn't have the
rights to use the Veritech form on TV, but they could buy the rights to
make the toy. So they made up a very similar 'bot called Skyfire.
