I think $500 to $600 would be a hard sell, but what I might do is gather
enough parts to make a handful of this set, and put them up on ebay to see
what people are willing to pay for them.  I would set a high enough reserve
so as not to lose anything.

I'm going to start putting some feelers out to Hasbro, Takara, even TLC to
see what it would take to buy the licensing.  I would love to get TLC to
partner up with me on the venture so I could get parts directly from them at
a low cost, if they would go for that, I would shoot for large runs of about
100 kits at a time.  If they don't go for that (chances are I won't even get
a response out of them) and if it looks potentially profitable, I'll shoot
for a small run and price the kits at whatever it takes to make a
respectable return on the investment.

If licensing is possible, I'll get stickers of the logos and use the
official names on the packaging and so forth.  If not, I'll sell just the
lego parts, and put the instructions on the web to be downloaded free, that
way I don't infringe on any copyrights.

My plan of action right now is to first either photograph the assembly
steps, or render the model in cad, and find out how many peices are in this
model.  I will then try to aquire enough pieces online to build at least two
models, one for a permanent keeper, and one (or potentially a few) to sell
on ebay.  Before I attempt to sell anything, I'll contact any transformer
related webmasters and get them to post links to the pics to generate some
interest.

I do think you're right about the timing, it looks like there are a ton of
transformers being bought and sold on ebay, and with the reissues, the
comics, the PVC figures, etc.. I have to think sets like this would be in
demand.  I just wish aquiring the parts for the kits wasn't such a hurdle.
I also hope that the transformers license can be obtained at a reasonable
price, because that would probably make a big difference to collectors.

As a Trans Fan reborn, could you see sets like this being in demand?  I'm
toying with the possibility of offering Transformer sets, and if possible
even aquiring the official transformer license (having no idea at this • point
what that might cost).  I'd be interested to see what price point they • could
sell at.

The timing might be right for such a venture.  Right now, Takara offers a • few
original Generation 1 Transformers for sale over the internet, and those • have
been selling like hotcakes.  They also offer PVC statues of various • characters.

In my experience, every mechanical engineer under the age of 30 I've ever • met
has been interested in Transformers; most have a strong interest in Lego • as
well (from prototyping).  So you potentially have a quite a few people • willing
to pay as much as $500-$600 for such a model (just look at some of the • prices
for OG transformers on Ebay).  I would definitely talk to Sun Yun about • this.
He has a lot of experience with selling custom sets, and his models sell • out
very fast at $200-$300.
