Could someone please explain the differences between light and heavy mecha
for me?  Does it describe function or appearance?

I guess it depends on the person defining, but as for my mecha, I have
Light, Medium, and Heavy. They generally refer to the size and armament of
the mecha. I don't have very strict rules for this. I usually just build a
mecha and then take a look at its size and armaments and make a judgment
call :^)

All I'd add to that is battle armor (slightly larger than human, exoskeleton
armor basically) and Super heavy/Assault Mech(a) (Walking fortresses).
Rule of thumb; small=fast big=slow.  But not always.

Now that I think of it Warhammer 40,000 has these things called Titans.  The
largest (Warlord Titan, Imerial army) of which carry thousands of soldiers
inside with its own air support detachments.

The only things I don't consider mecha are the big ugly square-looking
things that FASA came up with for their Battletech game. They then went on
to copyright the term "mech" and were very nasty about it for a while.
This is especially ironic because some of their "mechs" were direct
ripoffs of various mecha from Macross (Robotech)

so wouldn't they be mecha by that reasoning alone?  :p  <<see mark be
smart-ass>>

Oh, don't be shy.  Almost all  of the origional mechs were direct ripoffs of
Macross Mecha.  If you look the origional lineup (Battletech  I mean) you
can trace the lineage straight back to Macross.  I think it was second or
third edition that Fasa finally dropped LAM rules.  (land air mech; ripoff
of the Valkaie)
To Fasa's defense, however.  I do think they were trying to make a "Macross"
for war-gamers.  In so doing they made a popular board game. So popular in
fact other people eventually ripped it off.  Where do you think Heavy Gear
came from?  After the origional Mechwarrior, that's where.  And no, I don't
mean Mechwarrior2, I mean the DOS version Mechwarrior.  (circa 1986?)  It
was my favorite game at the time.  There were also a number or other war
games that didn't survive that tried to copy the Fasa mold.   My point is
that people rip off ideas to shoot of thier own.  In this case Fasa could
have used some better judgment, but it's risk paid off.
Also, since then Fasa has pumped out many more Mechs since the origional
few.  Very few of which are rip-offs.  And as for decent looking mechs in
battletech.  Look no further than the Behemoth or Caulderon Born.  Nova is
another mech design I'm working on stealing myself.  No hip, just
arm/leg/torso/leg/arm straigh across.
One last thing.  I always thought as Mechs as more realistic.  Mechs break,
need oil changes and ammo reloading.  Don't get me wrong, I'm sure these
things happen to the Japanese Mecha yet, they're always so, clean.  I like
my mechs smeared with grease and mud thank you very much.
