Which pieces are the right ones, though?  I need strength and compactness in
one package, so anything along those lines that isn't too rare would be useful.

It depends on the width of the legs and the total weight of the model.  If you
have thin legs (no more than 4 studs) and a light Eva,

You can use the old Throwbot gear boxes. Two put together and then click in
a technic beam on one end. My Q model uses this in the legs and hips giving
it slender and strong legs. Someone suggested to me that the design would
benifit an EVA greatly. Hold on one sec I'll find a link...

Okay I made this pic real quick for you. It shows an elbow, but it's the
same idea. I made the joint white. See where the technic brick clicks into
the wrist area? That's the key to making the leg longer. You can put a 1x16
there as well. It's super strong, however you'll only get about 45 degrees
if movement.

using several click
hinges in parallel will do the trick.

This is not such a bad solution either. Though the click hinges will
seperate from the leg if not supported properly.

Ebay is a good sources for large numbers
of click hinges,

Nothing beats Brickbay for click hinges. I just bought 300 pair for $30. You
can't go wrong with that. They are going for about .05 for each side.

or the Star Wars and some of the Life on Mars sets.  If you
have a heavier Eva with a Technic "skeleton" then anything from worm gear
combinations

I'd love to see some skeleton type bodies.

Good Luck,
Bryce
