Which pieces are the right ones, though?  I need strength and compactness in
one package, so anything along those lines that isn't too rare would be useful.

It depends on the width of the legs and the total weight of the model.  If you
have thin legs (no more than 4 studs) and a light Eva, using several click
hinges in parallel will do the trick.  Ebay is a good sources for large numbers
of click hinges, or the Star Wars and some of the Life on Mars sets.  If you
have a heavier Eva with a Technic "skeleton" then anything from worm gear
combinations to standard pins raped in paper will do the job quite nicely.  You
can also try using binocle pieces, but I have never been able to incorporate
them in a large mech, they don't have the strength to support large MS.

1) Gundams rock.  I like them a lot.  But anything that I do based on that
would essentially involve me looking at K's site and ripping off most of the
ideas.
:) True for the most part, that is if you can even understand what has K done
in the first place.  For the most part, I still do not understand what makes a
Dark Gundam.

There's also a ton of Zaku and Gundam designs out there.  It's been
done, and in a lot of cases, it's been done so well that I don't feel that I
could contribute as much as anyone else.  Also, Gundam as a series is fast
becoming the only type of mecha that kids these days have seen.  It's time
to remind them of the other stuff out there. :)

Evangelion really should get more attention, but it has too much philosophy in
it to reach the wide masses.

2) If other people have done Eva units (aside from the one parody page,
which is nice, but the scale's too small for my tastes,)

What are you reffering to?

where are the
sites?  I'd love to see where people have gone with this design.

Sun Yun is planning to release his Eva 03 soon, here is the preview:

I also have 2 Evas under constructon, and I might even get a digital camera
today (upiiiiiii), so I will take a few pictures of them in their current
states.  Even thoug both of them are very small, I thinking about creating a
larger one sometime down the road.  In addition, there could be quite a few
other builders working on Evas.

Thanks again,
CK

Good luck with the project!  I hope you will be able to share some pictures in
the near future!

(...) You can use the old Throwbot gear boxes. Two put together and then click in a technic beam on one end. My Q model uses this in the legs and hips giving it slender and strong legs. Someone suggested to me that the design would benifit an EVA (...) (23 years ago, 21-Dec-01, to lugnet.build.mecha)
