For the wolf, may I suggest using two 1x1 bricks with studs on all five sides.
Join them together with 1x3 or 1x4 plates to make a sausage body, and sculpt
around that.  That's what I did for my shire horse - I'm sure you could make it
work at a smaller scale.

Do you have pictures? this sounds like an interesting technique, and I'd like to
know how it looks.

Excellent again. I love the fact that I'm never quite sure what to think of this, but the modelling is always brilliant.
