Great stuff as always, Brendan.

Thanks, Bruce.

Gospels: Satan Tempts Jesus.

I like the wolf.  For some reason that design looks more blocky when the wolf is
standing, but in this reposed position the blockyness is minimized.

He is sort of blocky, isn't he?  I may have to figure out a redesign for the
wolf.

The duck is cute but a little too rectangular.

I'm not sure I can do any better on the duck.  @8^)

Nice Satan design.

Thanks.  One of the reasons I had originally skipped over the Satan Tempts Jesus
story when I first illustrated The Gospels a couple of years ago is that I
didn't feel I had the right parts at my disposal to make a good and memorable
Satan.  I didn't want to screw it up, so I left it for later.

I like his pitchfork, especially.

OK, cool.  I wasn't sure if I should use the "regular" brown minifig pitchfork
for Satan.  Somehow it didn't seem quite right.  Too farmer-esque.  I could have
altered it with a hobby knife (getting rid of that weird cross-bar to make it
look more menacing) and maybe painted it black, but as always, I prefer to come
up with solutions that don't involve physical modifications to the bricks.

Can we expect a lot of Satan-centered episodes in the near future?

Satan's a very cool character, and now that I have him all designed, I'd love to
see him in more stories.  The problem is he doesn't really show up in very many
Bible stories at all.  Pretty much the entire Old Testament goes by without any
mention of Satan at all, save for the book of Job which is mostly one big long
dialogue without much action to illustrate.

Satan gets name-dropped by Jesus a fair bit throughout the Gospels, and by Paul
in his epistles, but there aren't really any instances where it would make sense
to illustrate it using LEGO Satan, he's just being mentioned to make a point.

I added the two instances of Satan entering Judas because that's about the only
other place Satan does anything in the Gospels.  If anyone can point out any
Satan stories I may be overlooking, please do.

He shows up again in Revelation, but I'm not going to be tackling that book for
a while to come.  And I'm not sure Satan will be looking the same when he
appears there.

In Luke 4:12, is there some significance to the guy inside the building?

Not really.  I just liked the idea of having somebody (a preist?) inside the
temple while the great Satan vs Jesus showdown is taking place just above him.
One wonders if he's overhearing their words and worried that he's crazy for
hearing voices, or if he's just staring off into space completely oblivious.

The soft focus works especially well in Matthew 4:8.

I'm very pleased with how that shot came out.  The other reason that I had
originally skipped this story is that back in late 2001 I had no idea how I
would ever illustrate a scene like Satan showing Jesus all the kingdoms of the
world.  I feared I would have to build for weeks and weeks to portray something
like that.  Then later I discovered the wonders of depth-of-field perpective
tricks.  Even so, I had never attempted to show something like "all the kingdoms
of the world" in a single shot.  I was happy with how the mix of blue and green
baseplates, pirate island plates, and a river plate created a the illustion of
looking at whole continents and oceans at once.  At least, it worked for me.

I also decided to add a couple of Satan appearances
to the Last Supper story.

Effective Photoshoppery.  Are these scenes replacing others, or are these
completely new?

They are both new additions to the story, not replacing anything that was there
before.  I did slightly alter the photo that comes after Satan entering Judas at
the Last Supper.  It used to have him thinking "gulp!" at the thought of Jesus's
veiled threat.  But since I'm now showing that Judas was posessed by Satan at
that point, it didn't sem like the right reaction for him to be having.

I also tossed in this
illustration to the Crucifixion story:

Quick, everyone, run for the shopping mall!*

*First person to get the reference gets a gold star.

Um... that's not a Bible quote, is it?

I give up.

Excellent again. I love the fact that I'm never quite sure what to think of this, but the modelling is always brilliant. I love the attention to detail, and I'm always trying to pick out the right expression for my minifigs. (...) I must admit the (...) (21 years ago, 7-Apr-04, to lugnet.build.ancient)

(...) Hey, To me this shot just had a very "Dawn of the Dead" feeling (at least the original, I didn't see the recent remake). I imagine all the minifigs heading over to the local Jerusalem shopping mall to hide from the zombies. Bruce (21 years ago, 16-Apr-04, to lugnet.build.ancient)
