According to the Perry Rhodan series, usually like a sphere.
Functions? Steerable thrusters, retracting landing gear, opening
gates with extending ramps, all controllable by the pilot (and a knob
on top of the model for your ontrol, I guess :)
What I've been wanting to build is a storage device, rubber-band type
or similar, that gets wound up by rolling the model around (with overload
'valve') and is can power some accessory function you don't want to
spend a motor on. I was thinking about cars, but it would actually
be more suitable for a space ship.
On the other hand, multi-output controls a la 8480 (even if done
with (cheaper) pushed-to-mesh gears or smoothly with rubber tire
clutches, combined with the motor button located at the switchgear
(total control with one hand) would be about as compact, but for
batteries...
I haven't built a space ship in years; thanks for the inspiration.
