grey part is actually dark grey, and the spring has fewer windings
(~4 instead of ~6) and is much stiffer.

Yep!  But the other shock cylinders in the set, are they of the softer
kind?  So there's two kinds of shock suspenders in the set?

Yes, 2 softer ones and this 1 stiffer type.

But it remains to see what kind of front suspension system the 8448
has.  It's probably something quite new.  Or perhaps it's the same as in
8858?  Or in 8865?

I don't quite remember how 8858 was different. The 8865 system would
make sense, as it will allow for any large-enough-diameter tire,
rather than the 8880 specialty - which is of course not available
in a parts pack, so I can build to 2-WS cars...
Or maybe there's a new version similar to 8880 (possibly even using
most 8880 parts) where the part that goes around the CV joint ball
accepts (or has) a cross axle on the tire side, so that, again,
any wheel will work, if it's large enough.

In the meantime, I've come up with a no-special-parts steering/suspension
setup which, while not tough enough for heavy cars, is small enough
to be used with 2" (maybe even smaller?) tires, e.g. 'small tractor tires'
as in 8845
http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=8845
or 'Model Team' tires as in 8251
http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=8251-1
(Apparently, the former tire is again in a new 'basic' set.
The latter is obviuously in the new 8251. It'd be nice if there
was a small technic vehicle - i.e. a smaller-scale car chassis -
using either - preferably the former - tire, rather than
balloon ones...those 8845 tires are spiffy on a car with
a crown gear or a 6-hole pulley as a hubcap obscuring
the rather too small hub.)

Back to the suspension - I'll explain it in detail if it works well after
putting it in a car; simply said, it uses a short swingarm mounted to a
regular old steering knuckle; the back end of the arm is pulled
up by a rubber band; travel is rather short, limited by arm length and
the tire moving too far back when extended up or down a lot;
in the medium load position, the wheel is placed as if it was
plainly attached to the steering knuckle with one stop bushing
as a spacer, so the fwd/backwd motion when steering isn't too
outrageous.
