From whence does one get a catalogue?  Do you mean the 8-16page booklet
that's inside the sets, or is there a "real" catalog to be gotten from TLG?

(IMO) there is no definitive "LEGO Catalog".  In North America, there
are four different flavors of catalogs, with different purposes and
levels of completeness:

1. In-box catalogs.  There are basically two different versions of
these: the small folded-up one page flyer, the full current-year
line-specific catalog: one catalog for System, another for DUPLO, and
one for TECHNIC.  Presumably, there is a PRIMO catalog as well, maybe
it's rolled into DUPLO.  There is also a BELVILLE in-box catalog, but
it's the European one, because BELVILLE is imported for sale through S@H
and the LIC stores.  I'm not sure about SCALA.

2. Retail-line catalogs.  This is a parent-focused promo catalog,
available from Consumer Affairs, whose phone number I do not have handy,
but appears inside the front cover of all in-box catalogs.  The full
'current' product line should appear in this catalog, minus promotional
sets (promotional includes polybag sets, some buckets, and 'limited
edition').

3. Shop At Home catalogs.  These are the largest catalogs, you can get
one by calling 1-800-453-4652 and asking for one.  These catalogs are
generally not complete, but they do include sets which are 'exclusive'
to S@H (at least, you can't get these sets anywhere else in N.A.), and
some discontinued sets.  Of course, some older, discontinued sets have
such a low inventory, they are not included in the catalog, but you can
always ask about them.

This is longer than I thought it would be.

(...) Good list, good descriptions, but I only counted 3. the three you did were FAQ quality answers, though. (26 years ago, 4-Jan-99, to lugnet.build)
