This seems to confirm my suspicion that the hydraulic piece simply
provides a damped spring, pretty much like when you press eject on a
cassette deck. But I'm only speculating here.

I would suppose they are simply crome coated. My 1998 Norwegian
catalogue says that the 8417, 8428 and 8462 has aluminium hubs, but we
all know thay are crome coated plastic.
