I've pondered the idea of crashing the model outside on a cement
patio.  This would create a much more realistic crash than say
a carpet crash site.  The impacting pieces would most likely
suffer scratching and I venture to guess several plate pieces would
snap against the unforgiving forces of cememt.

It's been a while since I've ever done anything like this, but as a 12
year-old I remember wrecking my Deep Freeze Defender on several occasions. I
used to launch it across the room in an arc, leaving it to drop at least 4-5
feet on a medium thick pile carpet. The only potential problem was that of
losing pieces; the scattered in a pretty wide radius. No broken legos or
anything.

I really couldn't say what a concrete or a hard surface would be like.
Presumably you be more at risk for broken pieces, but you can solve that
problem by dropping it from a lesser height.

I don't think you'll have much of a problem with dropping a model like that
from 3-4, maybe even 5 feet. You definitely won't break any Legos if you do
it  on carpet. Legos are pretty indestructible.

[snipped lugnet.general] (...) If you put down a layer of cloth, like a sheet or towel, you can avoid excess scratches. There's not much you can do to prevent broken pieces and still have a viable test-crash. To minimize your losses, replace (...) (24 years ago, 7-Jul-00, to lugnet.build)
