I've pondered the idea of crashing the model outside on a cement
patio.  This would create a much more realistic crash than say
a carpet crash site.  The impacting pieces would most likely
suffer scratching and I venture to guess several plate pieces would
snap against the unforgiving forces of cememt.

If you put down a layer of cloth, like a sheet or towel, you can avoid
excess scratches.

There's not much you can do to prevent broken pieces and still have a
viable test-crash.

To minimize your losses, replace valuable pieces with less-valued
stand-ins.  You could use pieces with colors you don't like, or old, worn
pieces (although worn pieces might change the structural nature of your
machine).  Maybe you could reinforce pieces you view as especially
vulnerable (and valuable) by putting tape across/around their non-joined
surfaces/open areas?

Also, you might try stress-testing the UH-60, either with your muscles or
some pre-built rig.  Flex it and compress it.  This will duplicate a lot of
the stresses a crash will place on the model.  Stress-testing isn't as much
fun as crashing, though. :(

The destruction will be great.   I'm hoping the force will tear some
of the SEALs or crew in half.  A decapation would be nice to see.

Aren't there laws protecting seals?  You should just send some navy guys...

(...) Thanks Will, It's doubtful that any of the crew will survive the crash, but the resulting fire hazard might need fire supression. The crash site will probably be in a remote area -- not likely to be near an airport. I've thought about just (...) (24 years ago, 6-Jul-00, to lugnet.build, lugnet.general)
