The trick is to gear the motor right!! I admit my tanks do slow down a small
amount when they drive from a smooth surface onto carpet. I've never really
understood why other than friction being the cause. However, the Tiger is
geared so that it will climb most inclinations and also requires a great deal
of weight to stop it in its tracks!!:)(It will drag the other tank behind it
or a heavy battery box!)

Eric, You've made me sit here and count them!! On the Tiger there
are 64 links on each side, however, the Challenger has
74. Obviously, different wheel arangements will call for more or
less links. Buying 200 links will give you enough deffy.

I learned a trick from Chris Moseley when it comes to the need for
lots of tread links: You can put in an ordinary chain link (not the
wide tread variant) between every two tread links:

##=##=##=##=##=

That way, you can make treads that are 50% longer than before and they
still great on the model!

Interesting idea.  I'll bet this configuration would work a lot better going
over carpet.
