The piece has no valves or anything in it - it's just a hollow
brick with 3 nozzles on it.

It is?  I always thought there were some kind of valves inside it
which split the air into different nozzles depending on the air
flow direction.

Well, okay, I never opened one up.  But if you think about how it
operates - it's pretty basic.

After seeing the diagram in that old Technic set, it makes more sense that
this is a valve block, without valves somewhere the piston would just slide
back down. Which leads me to think that the pneumatic switch is different now
and has integrated valves.

Anyway, I can see that a valve block might come in handy one day!

Also, another piece I got was a light sensor in a 2x3 black brick. It also has
a hole through one end. It seems to be so that you can put an axle through it,
attach a thin pulley wheel, and have the sensor detect the pulley going round,
because the holes in the pulley line up with the sensor. I presume this is a
4.5V part, but does anyone know if it works with Mindstorms?

Matt

Hopefully this will clear up the subject of exactly what piece we are talking about. The one I am trying to describe can be found in set 8040. I have a scan of one page in the instructions which illustrates the piece I have in mind. (URL) this piece (...) (26 years ago, 23-Oct-98, to lugnet.build)
