I really like what Larry P.

AND Kevin S.!!! he had more suggestions than I did. :-)

Ooops... You know what?  You're right!  I think I mixed up a couple different
posts in my head.  Yes, it was Kevin's suggestions I was thinking of.  Thanks!

had to say on finding money for LEGO bricks.  I
don't know that I can improve on his suggestions.

Another excellent point.  Figuring out early on whether or not you can pull off
a model can lead you to:

1. Save it for another day when you have more bricks
2. Place an order (or more) from vendors on Bricklink
3. Go forward with the project, confident that you can complete it with what you
have

Three good ones! You forgot one more:

  4. (at least this works in town and trains) scale the scale back.. Dial up the
selective compression... make that model office building only 4 stories instead
of 6 and only 3 panels wide instead of 5... take two windows out of each
passenger car or decide to go 6 wide instead of 8, or whatever...

This is the way I got started. However, keep in mind, I make a fairly good
living. I realize not everyone does or is to young to work at all, or may be out
of work.

What I am trying to say, is you do not have to be rich to enjoy this hobby.

1) Found Michlug displaying at GATS show in January of 2001. Upon seeing their
display for the first time, jaw hit concrete floor causing slight injury.

2) Spent that entire weekend at the show talking to the members and asking
questions. Lots of questios. I have now participated in some way at almost every
show our club has done. Even though I did not have creations to contribute, I
still found ways to help.

3) Joined the club soon after that show. If you are to young, talk to parents.

4) Started going to club meetings and getting a closer look at individual
creations. Again, if you are to young, see if you can talk parents into getting
you to a meeting or 2.

5) Started building collection. I spent my first year with the club just
purchasing pieces. No building. The ideas I wanted to bring to fruition were to
big to try to build with a limited amount of parts. Obviously, you do not have
to go to the lengths I did.

6) Collection sorting started at the same time as I began purchasing parts. At
first I used inexpensive Gladware containers. They stack, and are compact. As my
collection grew, I switched to large Sterilite drawers. Warning: the 3 drawer
units are not stable when stacked 6 or higher. Trust me on this. I lost a
project that took 4 months to build in a matter of seconds.

It is now 3 years since I joined the club, I have over 200,000 pieces, and I
know exactly where evreything is. Now, I am single, so I don't worry about parts
getting misplaced in the wrong drawer.

And don't be in a big hurry to go out and buy every new set that hits the
shelves. EVERY set I have purchased, was purchased during clearance sales of 50%
to 75% off retail. Most larger retail outlets, have at least 2 a year. Watch
Lugnet to find out when. Most members will gladly share that info. I have only
purchased 1 set at full price. The ISD.

The last best thing to remember is HAVE FUN. Don't worry about what other people
think. Don't worry if that model you built does not look the way you want.
Picture what you want to change, and rebuild it. I have rebuilt the same model
many times before it turned out the way I wanted. That is the real beauty of
Lego.

That's it for me. Boss is looking over shoulder with stink eye. Time to get to
work.
