I think the subject of money has been covered elsewhere in the thread. But the
subject of time can also be a tough nut to crack. Finding time can sometimes be
hard but it can be done, as sure as you can find time to change the oil in your
car, buy groceries etc. Just schedule it in. I sometimes will tell my wife
that, "this Saturday is a LEGO day. I'm going to build, sort etc." And so long
as that plan doesn't affect something more important (like visiting Grandma)
then it's perfectly fine with her. She understands this is my hobby and is as
important to me as her quilting is to her.

And everything I build today is miles ahead of anything I ever built as a kid.
But I now have more experience, more patience and have observed what others do.
It takes time, but it's time well spent.

I really like what Larry P. had to say on finding money for LEGO bricks. I
don't know that I can improve on his suggestions.

Sorting and storage decisions are one of the best things to take time to do
properly. Think about how you want to find a brick 6 months from now. Do you
want to go looking for a yellow 1x2 (color sorted)? Or a 1x2 in yellow (size
sorted). Do what works for you. There are no wrong answers.

And to that end I would also recommend 'resorting'. Sort your collection now
(in whatever state it may be in) and then start building, start buying more,
start enjoying it now. Then a year from now (or whenever you find the time) go
through and resort some of your pieces. Chances are you will again find things
you forgot you had, or find pieces that you now know you need for a current
project, or parts for which you now see another purpose.

Totally agree.

Another excellent point. Figuring out early on whether or not you can pull off
a model can lead you to:
1. Save it for another day when you have more bricks
2. Place an order (or more) from vendors on Bricklink
3. Go forward with the project, confident that you can complete it with what you
have
And, of course, don't forget to have fun while you're doing all of this. That's
the point, isn't it? :)
Best regards,
Allan B.
