I've been coming to this site for a while now, and I just have one question for
everyone. How do all of you pull it off? Everything I've seen on this site so
far just blows away anything I've ever even come close to attempting. Even the
things that you people say you need to work on are far ahead of anything I've
ever done.

Anyway, I'm hoping to get some time together to dust off the ol' bricks, and if
I can, get some cash for some new bricks too. If I ever get a chance to make any
posts feel free to ask whatever questions, and give whatever advice. Above all,
everybody keep up the great building.

Dave,

As someone who is slowly getting back into building, the biggest turning point
in getting back on the horse was sorting my collection.  It was less than 40k
pieces at the time, and it took a while, but here are the benefits:

- In "dustin' off the ol' brick", I regained knowledge of my collection.  I knew
what pieces I had & didn't have by the end, kind of like when I was 14.
Familiarize yourself with your collection.

- It is now easier to build.  When I have an idea, I know where to find several
parts that can fulfill any purpose, as opposed to raking for several minutes for
each piece.  Also, no dumping out on the floor to rake through the big pile, and
cleaning up at the end of every session.  Now the majority of my time at the
table is trying new ways to fit pieces together, not hunting & gathering.

- While sorting, I ran across several pieces that I slapped together.  I got a
couple MOC's out of it.  This made the sort take longer, but who cares - I built
something, which is the whole point of this hobby.

- I can determine the scale I can build much faster.  I hated nothing more than
to start something, hunt through the pile to find all the pieces I needed, and
realize I didn't have enough to make it.  This goes back to familiarizing
yourself with your collection.

Once you're through sorting, you can build modules that go into a larger
creation later.  No matter what you like build or what your building style is,
you can get from idea to MOC faster than you could before.  Adrian Drake once
told me that if he works on an idea for more than a couple of hours and doesn't
see it going anywhere, he scraps it.  Those couple hours are spent building, not
hunting for pieces.

Look at the work you like of any builder here, and I'll bet you it came from a
sorted collection.

Happy building,
-Nick
