I think LEGO is nearing it's untimely demise of great fun that it used
to be.

I think you are being very short-sighted here.  IMO LEGO is just finally
starting to reach its potential (the Golden Age of LEGO is *NOW*)

Generally speaking, I think Lego is making a big comeback.  But they are
also making a wider range of products.  You don't like Jack Stone?
Bionicle?  Fine- spend your money on a Metroliner or Blacksmith's Shop.
Spend it on Star Wars.  Spend it on Mindstorms.  Accept the items you don't
want as what they are and buy the stuff you do want.  Lego is producing a
ton of great sets in addition to the, uh... "misguided" sets.

Golden Age?
For a trainhead, certainly.  Lego has the biggest range of train stuff ever,
and most of it is pretty cool.  I don't even hear much complaining about the
lack of 12v-style gizmos any more (powered points, decouplers, etc.)

For a spacehead?  The first 2 rounds of Star Wars stuff was the best source
of grey *ever*.  And Life on Mars may not be Futuron or Classic space, but
it is by far the best series since Exploriens.

For Castle?  Let me repeat the glut of grey in the early Star Wars sets.
Unfortunately, the actual castle sets are *way* overpriced and are the only
way to get the cool figs.

For Town?  Bulk offerings from Lego plus the existence of BrickLink allow
people to make incredible buildings.  But you can't get into decent town
stuff for cheap (think preteen budget here).  For goodness' sake, I want my
cars to have *doors* and other trimmings.  Why have town sets devolved 30
years?  No, don't answer that... I know why.  I just don't like it.

It's the best time *ever* to be an AFOL.  LEGO going down hill? Yeah,
like Franz Klammer! ;-)

Yeah- if you have a lot of money, this is the time to be a Lego fan.  But
that's a change in spending patterns and community as much as a change by Lego.

(...) That statement is right up there with: "If man were meant to fly, he'd have been born with wings." I think you are being very short-sighted here. IMO LEGO is just finally starting to reach its potential (the Golden Age of LEGO is *NOW*) Sure, (...) (23 years ago, 22-Mar-02, to lugnet.build)
