I actually have been considering this for some time. Last year I started
buying 1x1 red-trans bricks and plates (I have several hundred of each
currently)...
Nothing has come to fruition yet.

| Stacks and stacks of 1x1 plates aren't structurally sound, though you could make it 2 studs thick and use clear 1x2 plates tied through to the front layer. That makes it twice as expensive, though, and still not overly solid. What you really need to (...) (23 years ago, 26-Jan-02, to lugnet.build)
