One way which can be quite handy, if it's not too bulky for your
needs, is to use the "headlight bricks". If you connect the bottom
of one to the side stud of the other, such that the side stud of the
sideways brick is facing down, it will be possible to then connect
some pieces to the facing-down side stud. Also, the facing-down side
stud will be exactly one plate width from the base where the
combination is attached.
I hope this description makes sense; it's hard to explain.
