So, out of curiosity, I started toying around with the smallest possible Lego-cube that is smooth on all sides. IE no studs, stud holes, technic pin holes, etc showing on any of the 6 faces. While working out how to do the ribbed sides common on many modern locomoives I hit upon using this part (URL) After a serious of experiments to get the offset right I eventually came up with this design (URL) This basis can be scaled to suit, this (...) In a mathematical world of pinpoint feet, the two feet on the ground might not be stable, but a Lego four legged walker probably wouldn't keel over while following a gait matrix. In the worst (...) (...) ahhhhem. Quadrapeds are only inherently stable if the feet are big enough. If you break the four legs into two leg groups, worst case scenario is two feet on the ground.
