I have a better idea. The real tower has two elevators to travel to the first story. If you were to build these you could possibly put some extra supports inside and remove the white bricks. I built in a few technic beams with the idea of using pins. However, the pins alone would not supported the 40+ pounds of LEGO above it, so the pillar was necessary.
