I built in a few technic beams with the idea of using pins. However, the
pins alone would not supported the 40+ pounds of LEGO above it, so the
pillar was necessary. IN the end, I forewent the use of the pins since
they were a pain to line up during assembly.

Well, if there were a lugnet.build.tall.as.@!#$ newsgroup, I'd have
followups go to there...

Here's my latest project completed:

Wow!  This is so cool.  Much better than the one at LegoLand (which is
about half the size).

At first I was disappointed that it is blue.  But upon further
reflection I like it.  It reminds me of travel posters from the 60's
(or Orbitz commercials).

How are the sections held together?

It sounds like you didn't use any Technic, which surprises me.  I
would have used Technic pins and beams to hold the four base sections
together, which might have made the white pillar unnecessary.

(BTW: I'd suggest redoing the pillar in black so it isn't as visible,
for the show in December)

BTW: I'm in the middle of switching web servers for the second time in
less than two weeks, so if you find some broken links, I apologize.

It worked for me.

I've been wondering what you've been up to, since it's been a while
since you've announced any sculptures....
