for parlugment’s participation in ottawa’s annual train show, railfair 2006, i built a cantilevered house hanging onto a mountainside. the group had decided to try a new concept this year, leaving each member to build their own section, which didn’t tie into another person’s area unless pre-arranged. i was so bold as to not even include any rail/train components, though in hindsight, i could easily have laid track alongside the bottom of the cliff. however, this might have brought the value of the house down considerably, wink.

the house itself started with the living room window which i knew was going to overhang the lower level bedrooms’ patio area.

i posted re the bedroom and living room furniture months ago but only completed the mountain just in time for the show in october. i had reserved a lot of real estate without really knowing how i was going to build this mountain. i also didn’t prepare well by stocking up on dark grey and grey lego. thankfully, lug member jeff brundige saved my moc by supplying me with an indecent amount of old gray burps and 3 large tubs of duplo to build the inside support of the mountain. thanks to sarah and logan for giving up their toys for that period of time, although they may not even have noticed their disappearance!

mountain 1 was completed just in time but i was less than satisfied with its final look. the mountain is approached via a very steep gravel road that winds up with a hairpin bend to meet the front door of the house on the upper level.

for reasons of transportation restrictions and aesthetics, i resized the mountain for the toronto hobby show in november. i was more pleased with the outcome than before but realized my strength does not lay in rock and will probably not tackle too many other mountains in my building future.

the house itself features a 360º view with an interior courtyard and reflecting pool crisscrossed with walkways leading to each of the 4 main upper level rooms.

the foyer’s interior wall is a huge aquarium, featuring once again the artistic talent of fellow lugger, norbert black.

downstairs two bedrooms and a large shared bathroom all overlook the cliff patio with a wall of doors to take advantage of the spectacular scenery over the cliff’s edge.

enjoy living on the edge.

Nice concept with some gorgeous interiors, my only complaint would be that after all the effort of building that lovely mountain you crested it with a mere house; not a castle, as such landscaping obviously deserves ; ) Thanks for sharing and God (...) Stunning as usual deborah. Wish I could have been there to enjoy the details in person. (18 years ago, 4-Dec-06, to lugnet.build.arch, FTX)

Fantastic job. When I first saw the exterior shot of the living room window, I started humming the haunting music to Alfred Hitchcock's "North by Northwest". I was somewhat reminded of that night-shot of the outside of the Frank Lloyd Wright house (...) (18 years ago, 5-Dec-06, to lugnet.build.arch, FTX)

Fabulous work! But I don't recognise the half-circle part used in the chest of drawers: (URL) is it? Kerry (18 years ago, 17-Dec-06, to lugnet.build.arch)
