Hi folks,
Finally got around to photographing 2 more mountain bikes:
1.
A full suspension bike
- not really modelled after any bike in particular, although the front
suspension is borrowed from BMWs motorcycles. However, fully compressing the
front causes both axles to protrude up - some would consider this feature
dangerous to riders :) Yes, I realize those slick tires are NOT typical MTB
tires.
2. All-wheel-drive
mountain bike - modelled after the Christini all-wheel-drive system.
Basically, the rear wheel drives a driveshaft through bevel gears, which run
through the frame, and then go through the head tube, and to the front wheel.
I am not completely happy with this version, as there is a lot of friction. The
axles lengths are not ideal, and as a result, the axles and universal joints do
not run as smoothly as they should. So far I have resisted the temptation to
shorten axles by 1mm or 2 to make them fit.
I also managed to include a disconnect feature for the 2WD, as shown in the
photos. Since the disconnect is only at the rear, the front wheel has a lot of
friction because it drives the entire driveshaft.
Pushing the bike around, while steering, very clearly demostrates the need for a
differential in such systems (which the real bikes dont have).
Let me know what you think.
Comments / suggestions always welcome!
Play well!
John

| Very nice, I have a BMW R1100GS with that type of suspension. I have been planning a Lego version for awhile, I just never seem to have time to build it. Here is a like to a two wheel drive motorcycle conversion that some might find interesting. (...) (20 years ago, 1-Feb-05, to lugnet.technic)

| Cool! That BMW suspension does exist on some real MTB's but you kknow that already right? Not to fond of the pedals and the saddle is not very accurate I'm afraid. Barends is not that common on full suspension bikes either, but that comes down to (...) (20 years ago, 1-Feb-05, to lugnet.technic)
