I'm
It's called "Secure Password Authentication". It's supported by Microsoft
clients at least.
Solving this authentication problem for 97% of the computer users in the
world would be more than a small step forward in my book.

The NNTP server could add the header info when a user is logged in. You
don't want to do it client side because then that could be forged. Not very
good authentication that way.
There is also a third way using S/MIME which once again, probably 85% of you
already have it on your PC and just don't use it. It allows you to post to
any newsgroup (that accepts attatchments) with a PKI encrypted digital ID
that verifies who you are.
You can learn more about that here: http://www.marknoble.com/tutorial/smime/
