It would be nice if each NNTP message could carry its own authentication in
some simple software-independent solution.
One way that might work (for LUGnet members anyway) would be to search the
message body for the string (say):
[AUTHENTICATE:999:PASSWORD]
and use that member number and password to authenticate the message. The
string would then be stripped from the message before it appeared on LUGnet.
The potential problem with this is that if the user types this in by hand,
one day they will get it wrong (in a way that isn't matched by the
automatic-authentication-detector) and a clear-text password may appear in a
public message. One way to avoid this would be for LUGnet members to put
this string in their signature file, and so it is done once correctly and
then automatically appended on each outgoing message.
