I've had 1 post go astray and not received an email confirmation for it.
This is what I feared might happen - relying on multiple protocols to
achieve a desired result relies not only on the apps at each end functioning
correctly but also on the transports involved, and SMTP is not as reliable
as might be expected for doing this. Then again it may be a problem at the
Lugnet server whereby it's dropping messages randomly, or possibly due to
traffic (eg. limit on max connections to SMTP server, if too many
simultaneous connections in progress messages get lost because there is no
mechanism in place to pass them off to a holding queue or backup SMTP
servers). I have had so many problems with SMTP in the past under unexpected
traffic conditions that all of my apps on my web servers that send mail are
set up to attempt to send to multiple SMTP servers such that at each failure
it tries the next one in the list, and if all else fails writes an event to
the server log and dumps the message content to a uniquely named file where
I have another program that kicks a couple of times a day to pick up those
stray messages and try to kick them out again when it's quieter. Defensive
programming is usually the only way to get around this :(
