Yet, reading the charters for all three groups, there's nothing that
directs Ben to choose one group over the other two, so he posts in all

Here's my suggestion (new words are delimited with underlines):

market.buy-sell-trade: Community trading post, items wanted, items for
straight sale (no auctions _or third parties like BrickBay_),
experiences, market analysis, etc.

Strike "_or third parties like BrickBay_"
and c/straight sales/straight sales including third party sites like
BrickBay and other straight sale venues/

So if I am selling a set on my site, I can't post to .bst by both of your
modified charters, right?

No, that is not correct.

Perhaps I didn't post my mod very clearly ("straight sale" gets expanded
explicitly to include third party shops and Cary's prohibition against them
is struck) but my intent is that BST, and not .brickshops, is the place to
flog sales. .brickshops becomes more like .theory but with a focus on the
mechanics (and status) of the shops.

Cary on the other hand is saying to keep sales out of bst and move them into
brickshops.

Our proposals in this area are similar in that both of us do not think
posting to both places is good, but different in that the one place we would
want to see posting differs.

market.brickshops: Discussions _, announcements, sales_ and _other_
informational postings related to personal online LEGO-related "shops"
and third-party buyer/seller services (BrickBay, etc.)

Strike "_, announcements, sales_ and _other_" and add "but specifically NOT
including announcements of sales, new items, entries and exits from the
business, etc."

As I read it, my post would be correct under Cary's modified charter, but
not under Larry's.  Larry's seems to only allow discussions, right? No
announcemnts of any type except "Brickbay is down..."

or "up", or "here's why it is down", or "here's how I deal with bad buyers"
or, "here's mechanics of my order tracking process" or "here's details on a
new shipping offer that may be helpful" or etc.

market.shopping:  Retail, mail-order, and _commercial_ online shopping:
information, discussions, experiences, analysis; FOTW's (Find of the
Week), sales, promotions, coupon offers; LEGO Shop-At-Home Service
(phone/flyer specials, availability, etc.); liquidation outlets,
second-hand stores, garage sale tips, etc.

I'm OK with this one, although arguably garage sale tips belongs in
"theory", ne? Garage sales are not commercial endeavours nor are they likely
to persist in one place long enough for a post about a particular sale to be
of any value.

Again, under this modified charter my post would still be appropriate. I
guess it depends on your definition of "Retail" or "Commercial" online
shopping.  I see my site to be just as valid as any other online store,
albeit my stock is more limited.

No. The added"commercial" rules it out, I think (guessing at Cary's intent).

By tradition and some comments that have been here in the past, .shopping
seems to be intended for "big"/"real" shops, you know the kind, they have
full time employees or may have a brick/mortar component, etc. That's what
the readership seems to prefer. Posts there tend to be "I found something at
TRU" rather than "Hey, *I* am TRU and I have something great for you".

That rules your shop, and mine, out, unless we get full time employees or a
storefront, I guess. Hence my suggested change to move garage sales out, for
they are more small time than you or I and thus don't belong in a group
intended for huge shopping experiences.

But I would be OK with brickbay sales going ONLY there instead of ONLY .bst
Just not both there AND .bst... and especially not there AND .bst AND
.brickshops.
