It isn't a joke. Perhaps I'm in a bad mood, but I really am getting sick
of all these jokes, and I do have a real concern for the viability of
electronic communication. I must stress however that I don't think we're
that close to the brink of destruction yet, but I see worrisome trends.
I also tend to use extremes to examine systems. If a system doesn't
handle an extreme, I look at whether it is possible to fix the system to
handle the extreme, or whether one just has to acknowledge the
imperfectness of the system. It's an imperfect system of thought, but
then I tend to find it successful (it may be (is) bragging to say it,
but time and time again I have found that the code I write has fewer
bugs in it that average and one of the things that contributes is
applying this extremist thought system to my coding - one manager
actually started joking with me about a related tendency that I had of
coming into his office and saying that things were horribly broke
because of this or that insolvable problem, and then he'd stop by the
next day or so, and I'd have the solution - we started calling my little
pronouncements grenades - on the project I'm currently working on, the
one thing which keeps me going actually is that I've tossed a bunch of
grenades and exposed a bunch of very real problems, and have been
listened to, outside of that, I've perhaps done about 3-4 weeks of
productive work over the past year [it's probably a lot more than that
but that's just what it feels like - and that feeling of frustration is
certainly one of the contributors to my bad moodiness]).
