Unfortunately some parents' knowledge of the internet is limited to what
they hear on the evening news.

There is a 16-year-old young man who lives near me who was very interested
in building together, and he sent me an email so we could talk about it.
Unfortunately, his father is internet-phobic, and didn't want him to have
any part of it. I offered to meet with his dad to chat a bit, but he just
wasn't interested.

It's too bad. I suppose he'll have to wait until he's in college and can • do
these things without his parents' persmission.

Yep, know the feeling.  Planning the Legofest for this Sunday, I was
approached by a 15 year old from Michigan who really wanted to come, but his
parents were wary.  So we talked some and I offered to speak with the
parents, etc.  Not interested.  Then I wrote a letter to the parents (using
the kid's email address), very respectful and explanatory of the community
and my involvement in hopes of softening them up to allowing him to come.
To no avail.

People will be that way, and it is truly unfortunate.  My running joke with
AFOLs is 'everyone from the internet is an axe murderer, in fact, I come
home from 'fests with a bloody axe in my trunk too.' :)  But in reality,
internet meetings are no less safe than classified ads, or if you want to go
there, video dating services.  We are all fortunate to participate in a
hobby where there seems to be a lower per capita of 'weirdos' in the
hazardous, unsafe sense.  And its great that this community can claim to be
the 'friendliest place on the internet.'

I've probably met 75 people from Lugnet/RTL in person over the past year and
a half, and I could say that I would not feel uncomfortable with most, if
not all of them.

(...) <grin> Yup, I remember that'n at the Brickfest, thank goodness that was the second time I met you so I wasn't as scared as I would've been otherwise. You're a scary guy, Tim! <grin, duck and run> (...) Heck, they aren't even less safe than (...) (24 years ago, 10-Aug-00, to lugnet.admin.general)
