Okay, a half might be a bit of an exaggeration, but on posts that are more
general topic (ie Free Speech, Kids in High School, esp. politics) the
bickering about moderation can be very intense. This doesn't happen as much
on the uber-geek threads (like quantum physics). At work I read with no
threshold, at home usually 3 or 4 - I find that I pick up interesting tidbits
at work that I miss at home.

I can definitely see your viewpoint there. On the other hand, when I'm
limited on time, I mentally filter not by rating, but by subject title, then
by newsgroup, ie I try to read anything that looks like it's about auctions,
castles, new web sites, and anything that is fresh subject matter. I wholly
ignore the ratings, even though I use the web client.
A parallel (analogy?) to this is if someone who you don't know at all tells
you a CD is great, will you go out and buy that CD if you don't have the time
to listen to it or read a full review? If so, you'd end up with a lot of
Backstreet Boys, N-Sync, and Brittney Spears -- myself I know I would pick up
the new Metallica CD without any knowledge of what it is because I know I like
Metallica.

| (...) I have a major problem with their concept of karma, which is why LUGNET's article ratings system doesn't give higher precedence to any particular posters. (...) This is why anyone (any member, that is) can rate anyone else's article at LUGNET. (...) (25 years ago, 21-Apr-00, to lugnet.admin.general)
