Or do without, of course..

Well, as I've continued poking around all the options so I can make it
the most familiar to me, I found the Window Layout option.

I've tried a few of the layouts and the one which seems to work the best for
me is the 5th one (the three vertical panels) with a very large screen area.

Just to add my two bits, I use it with {message list above group list}
to the left of message window (with full headers showing)

It seems to be optimized for speed (lots of good keyboard shortcuts) and
reliability more than beauty.

Exactly the right philosophy ;)

BTW, if you futz with the conflibberjibbets enough, it can get to look pretty
good.  I recommend:

I'll add any extra comments to this.

     Quoted Text Markers               - >

I'd add :|, for Usenet use at least. Here they don't show up very
much.

Options > General Preferneces > Fonts:
     Variable-Pitch Body  - Lucida Console 8pt
     Fixed-Pitch Body     - Lucida Console 8pt

Don't do this. If you want to read everything in fixed-pitch, set the
option to read everything in fixed-pitch instead.

Personally I like to use Sans Serif 8 pt for everything, except
fixedsys for fixed-pitch. I read in variable-pitch, but compose
messages in fixed-pitch. I find my eyes get along better with variable
pitch.

Options > General Preferneces > Navigation:
Skipping to next unread group marks ...      - NO

Indeed.
Automatically mark messages read             - Whenever visible

I prefer 'when selected' myself, but that's opinion.

Options > General Preferneces > Message List:
     Follow-Up Indentation                                 - 2 characters

Prefer 4, because my reader is big enough that it still shows up
easily.

Options > Posting Preferneces > General:
     Line Length                                           - 76 characters

Could do with a bit lower - that's only two levels of quoting leeway,
you ideally want 3-4. But that's a matter of personal judgment.

     Prefix for Quoted Lines                               - >  (> + 1 space)

IMHO, ">" is better than "> ", for exactly the sort of people who
otherwise we could only quote twice ;)

Group > Default Properties > Marking Read:
When retrieving new message headers   - Do NOT mark any existing...read
When retrieving marked message bodies - Do NOT mark any existing...read
(these two are very important; the shipping default setting is
     horrendously stupid)

Indeed.
